One of the bigger questions that should be discussed amongst U.S. populists is - if Trump is pursuing an isolationist & nationalist agenda, will that open a vacuum of soft power that makes American interests vulnerable to harmful actors? That is to say - how much of the well being of the average American has been dependent on America's approach to foreign policy that Trump is disrupting? I believe the answer is complex and not discussed enough (beyond the sphere of simple morality, that is).
Of course, in this case, we need to define what is "harmful" as compared to American hegemony, not only for Americans but also for the global population.
Yes, it was unprofessional and unpresidential behavior. Par for the course with Trump. The grandstanding is a tactic, yet very American. It's akin to a very tense business meeting that's best left for the closed-door conference room. But as you insightfully pointed out, it's part of a strategy that he has been consistent with. And agreed, he is a foreign policy disruptor, for better or for worse.
While I agree, also Zelenskyy’s approach wasn’t very presidential. He had an arrogant body language. Like I mentioned earlier, in one of the other comments, the real deal is being played out behind closed doors. This move was a gesture to show the International community what they can expect if they turn on US and who the “boss” is. Trump knows the impact of public image and media manipulation all too well.
What an Interesting read Jasleen. This article really offers insights into changes- like you mentioned- in global politics. Once again we can see the world holding its breath as Trump resumes the reigns of global politics, and completely throws everything on it head that was once "sacred" practice of international politics. I think all we can do is wait and see if this new form of diplomacy governed by populist practices, will open the world to new hegemons, or will the rest tow the line not to stir feathers. Once again great job!
For me, what was more striking was why JD was there, when usually he’s not present for such meetings and should be out pushing the foreign policy agendas. Also, Zelenskyy had an arrogant approach with his body language. They anyway got the reactions they wanted out of the International community. The real deal is indeed being played out behind closed doors.
Yes. Everything seems so calculated- as it always is in politics. Zelensky does have a lot to loose if the US backs away its support, which I don't think Europe can fully assist to the capacity the US has done since this conflict began. Putting Ukraine in an awkward position- although i don't think so since following this he has received a warm welcome and sympathy in Europe. I am really curious to see how this will playout.
Enjoyable read if such a term can be used for such a serious subject. Not sure of the view of Trump being transactional as that would imply it is about the 'art of the deal' Yesterday demonstrated predatory and extractive behaviour which is the approach he took in his business life, reneging on contracts, paying late and making deductions to contractors, precisely the behaviour yesterday as Zelenksy was a contractor.
Great article, Jasleen. I think for Britain the message has to be to strengthen our own defences and also be in a better position to help out allies. I used to deliver the military programs for a UK university and hear the disillusionment of our non-commissioned officers. It has to change.
It’s a very strategic move from Trump. He knows this way too well. It’s all power plays, unfortunately at the cost of others. This is putting EU in a position where they have to choose between Zelenskyy or Trump. Are EU ready for that?

Yes, Zelensky(y)'s approach could be interpreted that way.

Thank you for your insight. I think it can relate to the art of the deal, in terms of public image and media manipulation. The real winner?
